Southwest Lousiana Biggest Loser

My friend Tricia from Dave’s Garden has been picked as one of ten finalists at a local TV station’s SWLA (Southwest Louisiana) Biggest Loser contest. Only four out of the ten will be chosen to participate.

tricia-before.jpgTricia’s a hard-working wife and mother of two kids and she’s been working hard to get fit. I know how hard she’ll work if chosen. Additionally, as a Deafie*, Tricia’s garnering much support from the deaf community, such as this signed video. I really appreciated the subtitles!

I encourage my readers to KPLC TV’s website and vote for Tricia! If you don’t see the voting portion in the page’s left sidebar, be patient and please check back; it seems the site’s had some technical difficulties. You can vote once daily through December 16. Please bookmark the site and vote daily through the deadline.

swla_biggest_loser.jpg* Concerning the word “Deafie”: I ‘m just quoting it as used by Seek Geo. I hope I don’t offend anyone for using that word; I figure if the deaf community uses it, it ought to be okay, right? I hope it’s not like some terms allowed within a group, but forbidden for use by outsiders. Jim Birbiglia’s routine, The C Word, pokes fun at this phenomenon. Life’s so confusing anymore…Don’t you just love our society, how it causes everyone to walk on eggshells?

Anyway, I just want this blog entry to receive traffic from people searching for the word “deafie” because I want to help Tricia be chosen for the SWLA Biggest Loser. I know she won’t take offense, at least! :)

I’m glad your concerned for your friend. We live in a world where it is hard to know what is and isn’t allowed language wise.

    Hey!

Good to see some supports on here for Tricia! :-D Thought I’d say this so everyone understand what “Deafie” means. It is more like short term for “Deaf person”. Just like “Deafies” which means Deaf people.

The same goes for Hearies (or Hearie). I guess you can say some of us are lazy to type “Deaf person” so instead it’s “Deafie”, ha! :-)
I have never heard of using this as an offensive so it’s all good.

    Happy Holidays! :-)
