Hello? Pope is dead…Oops

I didn’t post about it yesterday, but isn’t it one of life’s great ironies that Terri Schiavo died the same day a feeding tube was inserted in the Pope? And now it is his turn to meet the Lord. We have Fox News on right now, watching their live coverage of the vigil outside the Vatican as people await the death of Pope John Paul II.

Somewhere, a producer’s squirming in her seat. As they cut to a conference room, presumably for a different press conference, a woman’s voice came in over the Sky Italia audio feed, “Hello…Pope is dead. Hello…Pope is dead.”

The shutters have yet to close (that was to be the public sign for everyone), but evidently something’s happened. From what Fox News said, one of the producers at Sky Italia saw the Pope’s EKG flatline and just blurted it out, not realizing she was telling the whole world. Uh, oops.

The reporters are just blathering on ad infinitum, waiting for something new. The Italian news has reported the death, but the Vatican has yet to close the shutters.

Update: Oops again! He’s only mostly dead. They just said he’s still alive. Good grief, it’s a blessing all those folks in St. Peter’s Square can’t hear this silliness.

  1. Thanks for stopping my website. (I’m glad you “got” the April Fools joke… I wonder how many people just think I’m clumsy. Ha ha)

I really enjoy your writing! You have such a great sense of humor. And from that line about the Pope being mostly dead I can tell that I am in the presense of another Princess Bride fan. That’s an undeniably excellent trait –Kelly

“My name is Indigo Montogua. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

  2. Hi, Kelly – thank you very much! Oh, yes, definitely a Princess Bride fan! I was also going to throw in a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail (“I’m not dead…I feel happy…I want to take a walk!”), but I didn’t have time!

For those of you out of the loop, I left a comment at dietfacts.com saying the April Fool’s joke caught me off guard. The site’s logo was upside-down at the top and at first I thought it was a mistake…But then I realized what day it was. D’oh!

    Watch out for ROUSes.

  3. April 2, and the shutters are still not closed — but Pope John Paul II has truly passed away today. No April fools joke now, but a true reality. It is kind of sad that such a thing went around as an April’s fool joke even.

  4. Hardly a joke, you’re right. I don’t think it was as much of a joke as the result of a really bad blunder by the producer. Our technology makes reporting so instant, flub-up’s are inevitable.

  5. I have to agree that the media is all too often guilty of bad taste and total ineptitude. I am not Catholic so this mans death does not affect me as much as it does many others but his role in history is one that deserves respect and honor.

I hope that I gave you enough of a puppy breath fix today because she is so active now it is hard to get a decent picture.
