It seems to be a week of “what will they think of next?” kinds of moments. The Associated Press brings news today of caffeinated doughnuts:
Scientist develops caffeinated doughnuts

DURHAM. N.C. (AP) — That cup of coffee just not getting it done anymore? How about a Buzz Donut or a Buzzed Bagel? That’s what Doctor Robert Bohannon, a Durham, North Carolina, molecular scientist, has come up with. Bohannon says he’s developed a way to add caffeine to baked goods, without the bitter taste of caffeine. Each piece of pastry is the equivalent of about two cups of coffee.
While the product is not on the market yet, Bohannon has approached some heavyweight companies, including Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks about carrying it.
I wonder what success they’ll bring him. I can see them being popular with college kids and morning commuters. Shoot, someone who downs three or four of these babies will probably have more than enough energy to exercise, providing they’re in shape enough to exercise. I suppose they might work off a few of the calories consumed (but I doubt it).
For that matter, can you imagine Homer Simpson after noshing on a few of these?
Somehow, though, they just don’t sound that great. Aside from my trying to avoid high-fat foods, I’d much rather have a great cup of hot coffee and a regular doughnut if I’m going to get a treat. Combining the two seems to ruin the experience. Unless you have a cup of coffee with them…
Anyway, at Caribou Coffee, we already serve caffeinated food: Reindeer Nibblers, chocolate-covered espresso beans. So tasty, but don’t eat half a box at one time or you’ll be flying high. Just ask my mom. 😉
