Haiku
The haiku form is wonderful, each a concise, three-line poem. They can rhyme, but usually don’t. The exacting structure is what sets it apart:
7 syllables
5 syllables
It doesn’t sound like much to work with, but it is. It stretches you, really gets the creative juices flowing. Haiku, be it funny or poignant, is one of my favorite literary forms. What follows is an example of how current and humorous haiku can be. I’ll share more in future entries.
Breakfast buzz
It seems to be a week of “what will they think of next?” kinds of moments. The Associated Press brings news today of caffeinated doughnuts:
Coffee mugs

Howie and I have too many coffee mugs. We cull them every so often and give some away, but the bottom of our one kitchen cabinet somehow remains just short of overflowing. Some we will always keep, such as our Dave’s Garden flower pot mugs (that’s Dave drinking out of the mug, and long-time member and friend Horseshoe is in the framed “Mug Shot” picture).
Most sentimental of all is our one remaining mug of a set of two purchased at The White Oak Inn on our honeymoon in 1992. It’s our “I love you” mug; when one of us serves the other coffee in it, it’s a non-verbal affirmation of our love for each other. The recipient always responds, “I love you, too.”
So, mugs are pretty central to our lives. As both a coffee lover and barista, the following piqued my interest when it arrived in my inbox today:
Kwispelbier
Pop a cold one for your pooch. Now you don’t have to share your beer with your dog. No, now you can get your dog his very own Kwispelbier, a new non-alcoholic beer produced for consumption by canines.
Trying Zooomr
I’m trying out Zooomr at the moment. It’s touted as being “Flickr on steroids”. They’re also giving away free pro accounts to bloggers who post a photo hosted at Zooomr’s site. So…Here’s a photo.
Gym week
Happy new year!
For those of you who hit the gym strong this first week of the new year, I bring you this anonymous woman’s story.
